Optical, UV, and X-ray Clues to the Nature of Narrow Line AGNs
نویسنده
چکیده
AGNs with narrow Balmer lines show various extreme properties. In particular, rapid X-ray variability, steep X-ray spectra, peculiar optical and UV line ratios, and possibly peculiar line profiles. Since all these phenomena occur together they are likely to be related to one specific underlying physical parameter. I review recent evidence, based on HST imaging of low z quasars, which suggests that the Hβ line width and continuum luminosity of quasars provide a reasonably accurate estimate of the black hole mass. This implies that narrow-line AGN have relatively low black hole masses, and thus high L/LEdd, as independently suggested based on their steep X-ray spectra. I present additional evidence suggesting that the X-ray variability and the radio loudness are primarily driven by the black hole mass. The high mass inflow rate into the core of narrow-line AGNs may produce a denser and more enriched BLR, a high column radiation pressure driven outflow, and a smaller illumination angle for the NLR, as suggested by the observed emission line properties. Narrow-line AGNs may thus provide important clues for understanding the rich overall phenomenology of AGNs.

The Cosmic Evolution of Hard X-ray Selected Active Galactic Nuclei1
We use highly spectroscopically complete deep and wide-area Chandra surveys to determine the cosmic evolution of hard X-ray–selected AGNs. For the deep fields, we supplement the spectroscopic redshifts with photometric redshifts to assess where the unidentified sources are likely to lie. We find that the median redshifts are fairly constant with X-ray flux at z ∼ 1. We classify the optical spec...
متن کاملX-ray Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei with Intermediate Mass Black Holes
We present a systematic X-ray study of eight active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with intermediate mass black holes (MBH ∼ 8− 95× 10 4 M⊙) based on 12 XMM-Newton observations. The sample includes the two prototype AGNs in this class – NGC 4395 and POX 52 and six other AGNs discovered with the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey. These AGNs show some of the strongest X-ray variability with the normalized exces...
متن کاملIntervening Broad-Line Region Clouds' Effects on the Optical/Ultraviolet Spectrum
Recent X-ray observations of Mrk 766 suggest that broad emission-line region clouds cross our line of sight and produce variable X-ray absorption. Here we investigate what optical/ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopic features would be produced by such ‘intervening broad-line region (BLR) clouds’ (IBC) crossing our line of sight to the accretion disc, the source of the optical/UV continuum. Although t...
متن کاملMultiwavelength Monitoring of the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxy Akn 564. Iii. Optical Observations and the Optical–uv–x-ray Connection
We present the results of a two-year long optical monitoring program of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Akn 564. The majority of this monitoring project was also covered by X-ray observations (RXTE) and for a period of ∼ 50 days, we observed the galaxy in UV (HST) and X-rays (RXTE & ASCA) simultaneously with the groundbased observations. Rapid and large-amplitude variations seen in the X-ray b...
متن کاملThe Sources of the CDF - N : broadband spectral analyses , absorption measurements and the α OX − L UV relation
We present broadband properties of sources in the Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N) with known spectroscopic redshifts. The high luminosity and high redshift bins are dominated by typical quasars. The intermediate redshift (z ∼ 0.7− 1.5) and luminosity ranges (L0.5−8.0keV ∼ 10 42.5−43.5 erg s) show a mix of different source types, with the apparently absorbed objects in the majority. At the fain...
